Gorilla trekking in Rwanda

Rwanda Gorillas

Rwanda is renowned worldwide as one of the premier destinations for mountain gorilla trekking. The experience takes place in Volcanoes National Park, home to over a third of the remaining mountain gorillas on earth. Visitors embark on guided hikes through lush bamboo forests, mist-covered mountains, and rugged terrain until they encounter a gorilla family in their natural habitat. Spending one precious hour with these gentle giants is an awe-inspiring, once-in-a-lifetime experience that allows you to observe their behaviors, interactions, and remarkable similarities to humans.

The Trekking Journey
Treks can last anywhere from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family, but every step is a journey through extraordinary biodiversity. Accompanied by expert rangers and trackers, guests hike along trails shaded by towering hagenia trees, with the sounds of rare birds and primates echoing in the distance. The anticipation builds until suddenly—there they are.

The Encounter
Once a gorilla family is located, visitors are allowed a magical one-hour encounter. Watching a silverback—the powerful leader of the troop—calmly survey his surroundings while infants tumble in play is a moment beyond words. The gorillas’ human-like behavior, deep expressions, and peaceful presence create an overwhelming sense of connection between species.

Highlights:

  • Opportunity to see gorillas up close in their natural environment.
